24–26 September 2014
The Netherlands
An international conference for scientists, policy-makers and practitioners to share lessons on adapting cities and surrounding areas in delta regions to promote sustainability and growth.
- Deltas in times of climate change II: More information
- Call for workshop proposals now open. Deadline 15 January 2014
Around 70% of the world’s population lives and works in low-lying coastal areas and deltas where more than 75% of global economic value is generated. These zones are vulnerable to natural hazards such as hurricanes, storm surges, river floods and extreme rainfall while severe droughts and low river runoff threaten water supplies and transport. Climate change makes these regions even more vulnerable, but can also spur efforts to make coastal cities and surrounding lands more sustainable and resilient.
This conference will offer around 30 workshops clustered around the following themes:
- Risk assessment
- Adaptation strategies
- Urban design and infrastructure
- Green adaptation/building with nature
- Food security and the rural landscape
- Awareness, capacity building and community resilience
- Governance and finance
- Post disaster preparedness and recovery
