{"id":23452,"date":"2017-07-02T12:18:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-02T11:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arcc-network.org.uk\/?page_id=23452"},"modified":"2017-07-02T12:18:36","modified_gmt":"2017-07-02T11:18:36","slug":"model-data-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.arcc-network.org.uk\/enhancing-impact\/integrating-built-environment-models-into-geospatial-applications-systems\/model-data-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Model &#038; data guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"scroll-col\">\nAs part of our work exploring how to increase the uptake and use of decision-support models, Katie Jenkins has developed guidance on how to ensure consideration of models and data is included throughout a research project.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamental principles you should consider throughout the process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be open about what went wrong and what you did about it.<\/li>\n<li>Outreach shouldn&rsquo;t be an afterthought, but make sure it is costed and funded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"none\">\n<li class=\"jump\">Download our <a href=\"\/wp-content\/pdfs\/Improving-uptake-of-models-report.pdf\">in-depth model &amp; data guide<\/a> (pdf, 5.2 MB)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"collapseomatic collapse\" id=\"id6088c76a53373\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"1 Project proposal\"    >1 Project proposal<\/p><div id=\"target-id6088c76a53373\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Identify stakeholders who would use your data or model.<\/li>\n<li>Explore with these stakeholders what sort of data or models they currently use.<\/li>\n<li>Explore what data or models are currently in use and build on existing work, don&rsquo;t repeat it.<\/li>\n<li>Consider involving an industry champion to implement the model in their organisation.<\/li>\n<li>Work with stakeholders to develop strategies that are able to cope with a range of data requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Develop strategies for dealing with disparate or conflicting user needs.<\/li>\n<li>Establish agreements in principle for use of any private \/ public stakeholder data.<\/li>\n<li>Investigate resources needed for on-going data management and to ensure data remains accessible \/ usable after the project ends.<\/li>\n<li>Define what skills are required to transform research outputs into material suitable for users.<\/li>\n<li>Budget for phases of user-testing throughout the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"collapseomatic collapse\" id=\"id6088c76a533bc\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"2 Project management\"    >2 Project management<\/p><div id=\"target-id6088c76a533bc\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Will staff need additional training? e.g. data management, managing stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>Assign tasks to specific people.<\/li>\n<li>Investigate details of stakeholder data requirements and working processes.<\/li>\n<li>Engage with specialist personnel from stakeholder organisations who work with data or models.<\/li>\n<li>Find out if the way stakeholders and researchers use data is compatible.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss preferred data formats with stakeholders and third party data suppliers before research begins.<\/li>\n<li>Explore output and dissemination channels, as well as potential constraints.<\/li>\n<li>Expectations and requests may change, so be prepared to be flexible.<\/li>\n<li>Help end-users communicate with researchers and vice versa.<\/li>\n<li>Manage stakeholder expectations and be aware of stakeholder fatigue.<\/li>\n<li>Store data in a standardised (open source) repository throughout the project.<\/li>\n<li>Design and implement a monitoring and evaluation programme to track data usage.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a data dissemination and legacy plan that is regularly updated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"collapseomatic collapse\" id=\"id6088c76a533e6\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"3 Research\"    >3 Research<\/p><div id=\"target-id6088c76a533e6\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Keep the needs of stakeholders in mind while research is underway.<\/li>\n<li>Re-evaluate stakeholder needs regularly. <\/li>\n<li>Allow stakeholders and practitioners access to provisional data so they can provide feedback. <\/li>\n<li>Use a range of engagement approaches, for example, participatory workshops.<\/li>\n<li>Provide progress reports to keep stakeholders informed.<\/li>\n<li>Look beyond your initial goals and stakeholders \u2013 could your data be useful for other users? Is it compatible with other systems?<\/li>\n<li>Keep evaluating your output plans to ensure there are no barriers to implementation. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"collapseomatic collapse\" id=\"id6088c76a5340d\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"4 Results &amp; analysis\"    >4 Results &amp; analysis<\/p><div id=\"target-id6088c76a5340d\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Provide researchers with training on how to format outputs for different audiences.<\/li>\n<li>Continue discussions with users and personnel on findings, outputs, formats and uses.<\/li>\n<li>Continue evaluation and analysis of outputs and how they fit with stakeholder needs.<\/li>\n<li>Explore tools and mechanisms to support model and data management and sharing. <\/li>\n<li>Communicate the scale and limitations of the model to end-users.<\/li>\n<li>Researchers should make a note of any data format or model functionality&nbsp;they have proposed but could&nbsp;not use. This allows them to recommend improvements to stakeholders&rsquo; systems, and also to revisit the output&nbsp;later should external systems be compatible in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"collapseomatic collapse\" id=\"id6088c76a53432\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"5 What next?\"    >5 What next?<\/p><div id=\"target-id6088c76a53432\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Develop clear documentation on outputs, interpretation and limits.<\/li>\n<li>Take advantage of stakeholders&rsquo; expertise to understand the practical uses of the data or model.<\/li>\n<li>Explore options for creating a less technical version of the model for a wider audience to use.<\/li>\n<li>Investigate other funding sources to develop the model further into a usable tool, for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/innovation\/impact-accelerator-accounts\/\">Impact Acceleration Account<\/a> (IAA) or institutional grants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"collapseomatic collapse\" id=\"id6088c76a53458\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"6 Final stages\"    >6 Final stages<\/p><div id=\"target-id6088c76a53458\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Presentation and visualisation of data and tools should be clear, and geared to specific users and their needs.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the usability of outputs as well as usefulness.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on how stakeholders could use the model, and what that means in their particular sector.<\/li>\n<li>Enable the industry champion to take ownership of the model &amp; share widely, if appropriate. <\/li>\n<li>Tailor final engagement activities and locations to suit the stakeholders, for example, as part of industry events or where web-based activities are most effective.<\/li>\n<li>Explore collaborative grants to enhance the impact and usability of outputs, for example, working with web developers or other academics with different skill sets.<\/li>\n<li>Keep reviewing and monitoring after launch.<\/li>\n<li>Collect feedback on the usability of the data and model.<\/li>\n<li>Are the actual users those initially intended?
